ANZAC Day 2020 will be a very different day to the norm. Covid-19 has changed our lives, but it will not change our resolve to honour our brave soldiers. Feel free to share this. It is my take on ANZAC Day 2020.

ANZAC Day 2020 – by Gags

2020 was a difficult year
Hard times were sent to try us
No public gatherings anywhere
Because of this thing called “The Virus”

What really hurt me most of all
What left me badly frayed
I couldn’t go to Blackboy Hill
For the ANZAC Day parade

We lived in isolation
No gatherings were allowed
So how did we celebrate ANZAC day
If we could not have a crowd?

At the break of dawn on ANZAC Day
My radio came alive
And alone with a flickering candle
I stood at the end of my drive

I listened to the service
Played over the radio waves
And I thought of our brave soldiers
And the sacrifice they gave

Except for the distant barking
Of a solitary dog
I stood in perfect silence
As dawn broke through the fog

My thoughts now with the fallen
With pride for my soldier-son
Of ultimate sacrifice made
And acts of valour done

When the minute’s silence ended
I was taken by surprise
I cast a glance just to my right
And couldn’t believe my eyes

While I thought I stood alone
Honouring many a brave soldiers’ feat
Hundreds of flickering candles
Lined both sides of my street

The ANZAC Service had come to me
It had landed on my lawn
I honoured our brave soldiers
And these candles lit the dawn

It wasn’t just my radio
Countless other radios played
Thousands of people had gathered
For our isolation parade

It was the same across Australia
From North, South, East and West
People stood in honour
To pay our proud respects

With Aussie ingenuity
We will always find a way
The resilience that marks us
Made this special ANZAC Day

The bugle still sounded
the Last Post at dawn
But instead of at the RSL
They played it on our lawn

On this day, lest we forget
What Australians have always shown
That the strength of our Aussie Spirit
Means we’ll never stand alone

Covid-19 may have changed the world
But Aussie spirit shone again
Even though unable to gather
We DID remember them.
